Fresh, flavorful and so easy to make, this frozen strawberry margarita is the perfect summer cocktail and made completely from scratch. Serve it skinny, with salt, extra lime juice or exactly as is!
This strawberry margarita recipe is inspired by my blackberry margarita and is light, fresh and ready in just 5 minutes. But, I decided to put a little spin on it and make it frozen instead!
It has a similar flavor profile and consistency to a strawberry daiquiri, but margaritas are made with tequila whereas daiquiris are made with rum.
If you don’t want this to be a frozen margarita, just follow the same instructions for my blackberry margarita but use strawberries instead!
After this recipe, you’ll never be using a frozen margarita mix again! This from scratch recipe is quick, easy and bound to impress.
Key ingredients
Frozen Strawberries. You can use fresh strawberries that you freeze yourself, but it’s way easier to just use store bought frozen strawberries!
Tequila. I usually use patron, but any light (also known as silver or white) tequila will work. You want to use a light tequila for margaritas because it has the lightest flavor and pairs really well with berries.
Orange Liqueur. Orange liqueur is a sweetened distilled spirit and adds a sweetness and citrus flavor to the recipe. You can use Triple sec, Grand Marnier or Cointreau.
Triple Sec contains about 20% alcohol, and Cointreau and Grand Marnier are a bit stronger at 40% alcohol. Triple Sec isn’t essential for a margarita per se, but some kind of orange liqueur is!
Lime Juice. For the best flavor, I highly recommend using fresh limes, not pre-packaged lime juice, but that will work if you’re in a pinch. You need ¼ cup which is about 2 whole limes for this recipe.
Ice. Since the strawberries are frozen, you can easily do without the ice, but it will give it more of a slushy/daiquiri consistency rather than a creamy smoothie consistency.
How to make a frozen strawberry margarita
Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Taste and add more lime juice or agave as desired.
If you want a more slushy texture and not a smooth texture, pulse in a bit more ice but don’t blend it up completely.
Salt the rim of glasses if desired and serve immediately. Enjoy!
The easiest way to salt the rim is to take a lime wedge and run it around the rim of the glass, then add your margarita salt to a plate and run the wet rim around the salt so it sticks. Easy!
What is a skinny margarita?
A skinny margarita is just a regular margarita but without the sweetener, in this case agave. Follow the recipe as written but omit the agave for a lightened up version.
I like to add extra lime juice when making it without the sweetener to give it some extra flavor. The main difference between a frozen strawberry margarita and a strawberry daiquiri is that the former calls for tequila while a daiquiri calls for rum.
Prep in advance!
Yes! However, my suggestion is to blend everything together except for the ice, and then quickly re-blend with the ice before serving. You don’t want it to get watered down by mixing it with ice, and you want it to stay frozen!
How much tequila should I use?
This recipe calls for 1/3 cup of tequila total, which yields 2 servings. That’s about 2 1/2 tablespoons for each serving which is about 2 ounces.
A standard shot is 1.5 ounces, so these are slightly stronger than that. Feel free to scale up or down a bit depending on your preferences!
