As a gluten free baker, almond flour is a staple in my pantry! I go through more bags than I care to admit, which is unfortunate because almond flour can be quite pricey!
It’s more popular now than ever due to it versatility and ability to add moisture and structure to baked goods. From macarons, muffins, cookies and more, this is a versatile flour I definitely recommend experimenting with!
Almond Flour vs. Almond Meal
Fine almond flour is made from blanched almonds without the skin, which results in a very fine flour. On the other hand, almond meal is made with whole almonds with the skin, so it has a much more grainy texture.
Some recipes are more forgiving than others so you can use them interchangeably, but general speaking, if a recipe calls for one, you don’t want to swap for the other.
Using fine blanched almond flour helps keep recipes light and fluffy, but in things like cookies, you can often safely use almond meal since they’re a bit more forgiving.
Swapping for Regular Flour
Almond flour works very differently than any other kind of flour and I don’t recommend swapping regular all purpose flour for almond flour.
Almond flour does not contain gluten, so generally, you want to use a recipe that specifically calls for almond flour if you’re looking to bake with it!
Storage Tips
If you’re like me and go through a bag of almond flour in a short time, you can safely store it in your pantry at room temperature. Otherwise, you can store it in the fridge since its high fat content can cause it to go rancid pretty quickly.
Health benefits
Almond flour is naturally gluten free, and of course grain free, so it’s perfect for anyone looking to experiment with more grain free baking. It’s much lower in carbs than other flours, so it’s keto friendly and can be used in a variety of baked goods.
