This sweet potato smoothie is easy to make, ready in just five minutes, and tastes like healthy sweet potato pie! It’s the ultimate Fall snack or breakfast recipe and is made with simple and delicious ingredients.
It’s officially squash/yam season I could not be more excited!!! I’ve been eating butternut squash and pumpkin up the wazoo, but am officially moving on to sweet potatoes thanks to this delicious smoothie. This sweet potato smoothie recipe is basically Fall in a cup.
Like my pumpkin oatmeal, it has all the warming and delicious flavors of fall, but it’s a smoothie (clearly!) so it’s perfect since September can still be pretty warm out.
I love topping this smoothie off with some of my almond butter granola and pumpkin seeds for a little crunch, but it’s absolutely delicious on it’s own!
Even though you can eat raw sweet potato, I recommend using cooked for this recipe! You can use canned, frozen, leftover baked or steamed sweet potato, it doesn’t really matter. You’ll just need to adjust the amount of milk you use accordingly.
Ingredients
Sweet potato: Because sweet potato smoothie, duh! You can use sweet potato puree made from scratch, or sweet potato puree from a can. Both are delicious!
Banana: For creaminess and sweetness. This recipe calls for frozen banana, but you can sub fresh banana with no problem. I’d just suggest you add a handful of ice so the smoothie is cold and thick.
Dates: For sweetness. You can add an extra date if your taste buds prefer, or sub for honey or maple syrup!
Hemp hearts: The hemp hearts add tons of nutrients, healthy fats, and protein to keep you full and are great to add to smoothies. Don’t have them? Just leave them out or sub with chia seeds!
Cinnamon & nutmeg: These add lots of flavor and makes this smoothie taste like pie.
Non-dairy milk: To get the smoothie blending and for creaminess! You can use any non-dairy milk, but I love almond milk and generally use that in my recipes. This recipe is also delicious with my homemade walnut milk or banana milk.
Frequently asked questions
Fruit! I always keep my smoothies naturally sweetened and don’t like to use any maple syrup or honey. Stick to the whole stuff when it comes to smoothies! Bananas, dates and mango are great to sweeten smoothies. For this recipe, we’ll be using banana, dates, and sweet potato to help give this smoothie the best flavor.
It totally depends on whether you are using fresh or frozen fruit and how thick you like your smoothies to be! I usually start with about 1 cup of liquid and adjust as needed. If you have a high speed blender, you can get away with less liquid, but it all depends on your preferences.
This smoothie is made nice and thick thanks to frozen banana! Start off with a small amount of liquid and adjust to your liking to ensure the smoothie stays thick. However, if you overdo it on the milk and want to thicken it up, you can add in extra frozen banana or a handful of ice.
Yes, you can make this smoothie ahead of time and keep it in the fridge for about 24 hours. You will probably want to give it a good stir or shake since the texture won’t be quite the same after it sits!

Love, love, love this smoothie! I make it at least once a week. I’m always looking for new ways to eat sweet potato and this recipe is a winner. I’ve never had sweet potato pie so can’t compare it to the real thing, but it is delish and my family loves it. Thanks for the recipe!
